Automatic and manual feeding rabbit cages create different work patterns. Manual feeding places more of the daily distribution task with staff; an automatic arrangement adds a conveying and delivery system that also needs inspection and maintenance. Compare them using the proposed cage layout and management routine, not just the number of animals.
Follow the feed from storage to the cage
For a manual arrangement, map the route used to refill feeding points and remove remaining feed. Check cart access, working reach and the number of stops along each row. A low equipment price can conceal an awkward route that becomes apparent only when the shed is occupied.
For automatic feeding, request a drawing of the supply path, drives, transfer points and cage outlets. Confirm the feed characteristics for which the system is proposed. Ask how the operator detects uneven delivery, isolates a fault and checks the farthest feeding points.

Compare the work that remains
Automation does not remove observation and cleaning. Both options need accessible feeding surfaces, a way to identify blocked or damaged points and a defined inspection routine. Discuss how different groups are managed if their feeding programmes differ; a shared line should not be assumed to provide independent control at every cage.
Include the additional components in the comparison: power supply, controls, mounting parts, spare drives or wear items and installation work where applicable. For manual feeding, include the practical handling equipment and storage arrangement. Keep operating assumptions visible rather than presenting an unsupported labour saving percentage.
Test a representative section
Ask for a demonstration covering normal delivery, stopping, cleaning and restarting. Check staff access with doors open and tools in use. A sample row can reveal conflicts between feeding equipment and animal handling before the layout is repeated.
Choose the arrangement whose daily tasks and failure response the farm can support. The order should identify the exact cage and feeding configuration together, including any interfaces supplied locally. This reduces the risk of buying cages first and discovering later that the preferred feeding system cannot be fitted conveniently.
