Cattle headlocks should be selected for the animals, feeding barrier and operating method on the farm. The important dimensions include the usable opening and movement, not only the length of a complete panel. Request the exact model and a drawing that shows its operating positions.
Connect animal information to the barrier layout
Describe the cattle group and the intended management use. Show the feed area, supporting structure and access route on a plan. The proposed headlock should be reviewed against the farm's animal-handling requirements, rather than chosen from an external panel dimension alone.
For replacement work, record the current support spacing and mounting points. Photograph the existing barrier and any alterations. A new panel may need different attachments even when its overall length appears to match the old installation.

Understand the release functions
Ask the supplier to demonstrate the intended operating and release positions for the model. Identify how the operator accesses the controls and which functions apply to an individual position or a group where relevant. Do not assume all headlocks share the same mechanism.
The farm's responsible personnel should review the operating method and training needs. Component movement and safe animal handling need to be understood together. This selection guide does not prescribe a universal restraint procedure.
Review fabrication and service points
Request the material, finish and connection information for panels, moving parts and hardware. Examine accessible edges, welds and potential interference with neighbouring equipment. Ask which components can be replaced independently.
Keep part references for hinges, latches or operating components as supplied. A similar-looking part may not preserve the intended movement. Obtain compatibility confirmation before substituting a replacement.
Approve the complete installed arrangement
- Model and usable opening dimensions identified.
- Animal group and management use defined.
- Support and mounting interfaces confirmed.
- Operating and release functions demonstrated.
- Service references and instructions handed over.
Check a complete section before repeating the installation across the barn where interfaces are uncertain. The final review should include the operator who will use the barrier. A headlock panel is most useful when its dimensions, operating functions and surrounding space have been assessed together, rather than treated as an isolated length of livestock fencing.
