Famou Machinery By Famou Machinery

Slant bars and headlocks provide different feeding-barrier arrangements. The choice depends on the farm's required access and management functions, not simply on which panel fits the opening. Compare their purpose before comparing material or price.

Define the required function

Describe how cattle use the feeding area and what the farm expects the barrier to do. A headlock proposal should identify its intended operating and release functions. A slant-bar proposal should identify the opening arrangement and its role at the feeding line.

Review the alternatives with the responsible animal-management personnel. Do not assume one arrangement can replace the other unchanged when the management requirement differs. The selected system needs to fit the farm's handling and housing requirements.

Compare the same feeding line

Put both options into a drawing of the same feed area, supports and passages. Identify usable openings and the operator's access. A panel's overall length does not explain all of those dimensions.

For replacement work, record existing fixing points and any modifications. Ask which supports or connections can be retained and which must change. Those differences should appear in the installed-cost comparison.

Examine moving and fixed components

For the headlock arrangement, ask for a demonstration of the supplied operating positions and service requirements. For both alternatives, review material, finish, joints and accessible edges. Confirm the correct references for any replaceable hardware.

A simpler-looking barrier does not eliminate the need for installation and condition checks. Likewise, additional operating functions need documented instructions and training. The comparison should reflect how the farm will actually use and maintain the equipment.

Record the selection basis

  • Required feeding and management function.
  • Animal group and applicable housing brief.
  • Openings, supports and access shown on a drawing.
  • Operating and maintenance requirements.
  • Complete supplied and locally provided components.

Once the functional distinction is clear, the material and price comparison becomes more meaningful. Keep the final barrier type and configuration with the barn records. A later replacement should preserve the assessed function and interfaces rather than being selected solely because a different panel has a similar outside dimension.
