Home     /     Blog     /     Chain Disc vs Auger Feeding: Choosing a Conveying System
Famou Machinery By Famou Machinery

Choosing a farm feed conveyor starts with the route between storage and the receiving equipment. A short connection to one house presents a different problem from a route serving several destinations with changes in direction or elevation. The appropriate system is the one specified for that route and the feed it will carry.

Chain disc and auger systems use different conveying mechanisms. A chain disc system moves discs through a pipe using a driven chain. An auger system uses a rotating screw or spiral. Both need a matched arrangement of pipe, drive, inlet and discharge components; a pipe diameter alone is not a complete specification.

Draw the route before choosing the mechanism

Start at the silo outlet and draw every receiving point. Add the horizontal distances, height changes and intended direction changes. Mark buildings or roads the line must cross, then identify positions where the drive and inspection points can be reached.

The Famou Machinery auger and pipe feeding line is presented for automated feed transfer, particularly short-distance, straightforward routes. The 102 mm chain disc system provides another route option, while the long-distance chain disc feed line addresses longer conveying arrangements. These descriptions help form a shortlist; the supplier still needs to confirm the exact route.

Translate feed demand into a delivery requirement

Daily feed consumption does not automatically determine the conveyor capacity. The available operating window matters. As a simple planning example, delivering 2,400 kg in four operating hours requires an average of 600 kg per hour. This is an illustrative calculation, not a rating for either Famou Machinery system.

The equipment selection also needs to account for how the line will be used during that window. Ask about starts and stops, the order in which receiving points fill, and the allowance needed for the proposed operation. Give the supplier both the daily quantity and the available delivery time rather than requesting a motor based only on total daily consumption.

Describe the feed instead of assuming compatibility

Provide the feed form, such as meal, pellets or crumbles, together with the relevant material information available from your feed supplier. Mention whether the same route will carry different feeds. If preserving pellet condition is important to the purchasing decision, agree on how that will be evaluated.

A useful performance confirmation names the material and route used for the stated result. Request the operating conditions behind a capacity figure. For a critical application, discuss a representative material trial and record the acceptance criteria before placing the order.

Compare the complete equipment schedules

For a chain disc proposal, identify the drive, chain and discs, pipe sections, direction-change components, outlets and supports. For an auger proposal, identify the drive, auger, pipe, inlet, discharge and support arrangement. Ask each supplier to show how the components are matched and which items are excluded.

  • Control sequence: which destination receives feed first, and how is completion detected?
  • Interfaces: what connects the silo outlet to the conveyor and the conveyor to the receiving hopper?
  • Access: where can operators inspect or replace the components likely to need attention?
  • Protection: what does the specified system do when an abnormal operating condition is detected?
  • Supply requirements: what electrical and mounting information must be confirmed before delivery?

Separate purchase price from the installed scope

A basic drive-and-pipe price may omit supports, route changes, sensors or site installation. Compare quotations against the same route drawing and receiving-point list. Ask for the parts and labour needed to complete the installation, then examine the recommended spare parts and maintenance access.

For an existing line, do not mix new pipe, chain, discs or auger components on the assumption that a similar nominal size means they are interchangeable. Obtain compatibility confirmation for the actual system. Maintenance and clearing procedures should follow its manual, with equipment isolated before opening guarded or moving assemblies.

What to send for a conveyor proposal

Prepare a route sketch, feed description, required delivery quantity and time window, receiving-point list, available power information and photographs of existing connections. State whether the work is a new installation, a replacement or an extension.

Send that package through the Famou Machinery enquiry form. A proposal tied to these inputs lets you compare chain disc and auger conveying on a shared operating requirement, instead of choosing from an isolated catalogue capacity or pipe size.
