A dry-wet pig feeder brings feed delivery and water access into one feeding arrangement. The choice should be based on the animals, the feeding routine and the ability to control and clean the equipment. A large hopper alone does not tell you how the feeder will perform at the trough.
Distinguish storage from feeding access
The hopper holds feed, while the outlet and trough determine how it becomes available. Ask for the hopper dimensions and the adjustment mechanism separately. Confirm how operators change the outlet setting and how that setting is kept consistent across similar feeders.
Place the feeder footprint on the pen plan. Show the intended access sides and any obstruction created by a partition or post. A double-sided arrangement and a single-sided arrangement cannot be compared only by hopper volume because their relationship to the pen is different.

Review the water connection
Identify where the water enters, which valve or drinking component is supplied and how it is accessed. Record the connection requirements and ask for the operating conditions specified for the model. The farm should be able to isolate the unit for inspection without improvising a connection after delivery.
Check how water in and around the trough is managed during routine use and cleaning. If existing pipework is retained, give the supplier photographs and connection details. A feeder described as dry-wet still needs a defined interface with the site's water system.
Look closely at the adjustment and cleaning parts
Request photographs of the outlet, moving mechanism and interior corners. Ask which parts are removable and whether tools are needed. Operators should be able to identify an intended adjustment rather than compensate for an obstruction by opening the feeder further.
Where several models are being considered, compare the cleaning sequence and replacement parts. Materials for the hopper, trough and mechanism may differ within the same product. Record them as separate components in the quotation.
Establish a commissioning record
Start with the manufacturer's settings and observe the feeder with the intended feed and animal group. Record the initial configuration, feed condition and any subsequent adjustment. Change one relevant variable at a time so the effect can be understood.
An enquiry should include the pig group, pen arrangement, feed form, intended access sides and available water connection. Ask for a complete unit specification covering the trough, hopper, adjustment mechanism, drinking components and mounting parts. That gives the supplier a practical basis for proposing a feeder and gives the operator a clear reference after installation.
