Environmental sensor commissioning should verify the signal from its physical location to the controller display. A sensor can be connected and still be poorly identified, incorrectly configured or unsuitable for the intended position. Treat location, measurement and signal interpretation as separate checks.
Confirm the sensor reference and position
Record the sensor model, measured quantity and installed location. Compare the position with the design and manufacturer guidance. Nearby equipment or an unrecorded relocation may change what the reading represents.
Label the sensor so the physical device can be matched to the control-system name. A display reading called temperature two is difficult to investigate if nobody can identify the corresponding device in the house.

Verify the measurement basis
Use the manufacturer's procedure and suitable reference equipment where a comparison or calibration is required. Record the conditions and individual results. A single apparent agreement should not be treated as proof of performance across the full operating range.
Confirm units and any required configuration. Resolve differences through the documented procedure rather than applying an arbitrary offset until the display matches an expected number. If the result is uncertain, obtain technical support before using it as the basis for automatic control.
Follow the signal to its use
Check that the intended controller input receives the sensor information and that the displayed label and units are correct. Where the signal is also sent to an IoT platform or alarm function, identify those additional paths separately.
Review how an unavailable or faulty signal is indicated under the system documentation. Operators should be able to distinguish a current measurement from a missing input or stale record. Any control-response test should follow an agreed procedure for the installation.
Keep a commissioning sheet
- Sensor model and physical location.
- Controller input and displayed name.
- Units, configuration and verification method.
- Recorded comparison or test results.
- Relevant alarm or monitoring connections checked.
Retain the sheet after handover. If a sensor is moved or replaced, update the identification and repeat the relevant checks. This prevents a future operator from trusting a familiar display label whose source or configuration has changed since the original installation.
