Farrowing crates and gestation stalls belong to different stages of a breeding unit. Treating them as interchangeable steel enclosures overlooks the equipment around the sow and the work performed in each area. The comparison should begin with the production stage, then follow the animals, feed, water and cleaning tasks through the room.
A farrowing arrangement includes the piglet area
When comparing a farrowing pen, examine the sow section together with the surrounding space for piglets. Floor materials, access to the litter, warming equipment where specified, and the position of the feeder form part of the complete arrangement. The external footprint can therefore represent much more than the central crate.
The operator also needs to reach different areas of the pen. A drawing should show opening directions, removable parts and the relationship between the sow floor and adjacent piglet flooring. A quotation for the central frame alone is not equivalent to a complete farrowing pen package.

A gestation stall has a different layout brief
A gestation stall proposal concentrates on the sow space, access, feeding position and the way repeated units form a row. Internal dimensions and adjustment positions need to be reviewed against the animals and the intended management system. The route into and out of the row matters as much as the nominal frame size.
Avoid transferring a farrowing pen's capacity calculation to a gestation room. Different working areas, equipment positions and movement requirements can change how much usable space remains in the building. Each room should have its own layout drawing and equipment schedule.
Compare complete room packages
List the components separately for each stage: enclosure, floor, trough, drinking equipment, fixings and any additional piglet-area items. Then identify the building interfaces, including water supplies and manure channels. This makes the boundary between equipment supply and site construction visible.
For example, a replacement gestation frame may be intended to use an existing trough, while a farrowing package may include new floor panels and supports. Their unit prices answer different purchasing questions. Comparing only the price of the steel frames would hide that difference.
Make the transition between rooms explicit
The two systems meet through the farm's animal flow, not through identical dimensions. Include access doors and transfer routes in the planning discussion. Specify the housing requirements applicable to each stage and ask for confirmation against the proposed arrangement.
Use separate reference drawings and order descriptions for gestation and farrowing equipment. Clear naming helps installers, purchasing staff and operators distinguish which components belong in each room and reduces the risk of an apparently similar component being supplied for the wrong purpose.
