Famou Machinery By Famou Machinery

Feed silo capacity starts with the quantity the farm needs between deliveries. That requirement should be calculated before selecting a catalogue volume. The final choice also depends on the feed's bulk density, the usable capacity of the silo and the arrangements for filling and emptying it.

Calculate the storage requirement

List the animal groups supplied by the silo and use the farm's approved feed-consumption figures. Multiply the relevant daily quantity by the intended interval between deliveries. Keep different feeds separate where they require separate storage; adding all feed demand together does not establish the size of each individual silo.

For an illustrative calculation, a farm using 1.2 tonnes per day and planning five days between deliveries needs 6 tonnes for that interval. Any operating reserve should be identified separately, with its reason. These example figures describe arithmetic, not a feeding recommendation or a standard reserve for every farm.

Convert mass to a volume requirement

Use bulk-density information for the actual feed. Dividing the required mass by bulk density gives a material volume, but that is not automatically the silo's order capacity. Ask the supplier to explain the distinction between geometric volume, usable storage and any operating allowance in the proposed model.

As a second illustration, 6 tonnes at 0.6 tonnes per cubic metre occupies 10 cubic metres. A different density changes that result. Keep the units visible so kilograms, tonnes and cubic metres are not mixed in the calculation.

Check filling and discharge logistics

Describe delivery vehicle access, the filling connection and the intended receiving feed line. The chosen silo should fit the site and the refill arrangement. Record any restrictions on vehicle movement and the space needed around the silo for inspection and service.

Ask how feed level is monitored and how the operator decides when to reorder. If a weighing system is included, coordinate it with the support and foundation arrangement. Capacity and monitoring should use a consistent basis so the displayed quantity is meaningful to the operator.

Keep the assumptions with the quotation

  • Daily feed demand and the groups included.
  • Delivery interval and separately stated reserve.
  • Feed type and bulk-density basis.
  • Supplier's usable-capacity definition.
  • Filling, discharge and site-access requirements.

This record allows the farm to revisit the choice when stocking, feed type or delivery frequency changes. A silo selected only from a headline tonnage leaves those assumptions hidden and makes later expansion decisions harder to assess.
