Home     /     Blog     /     How to Plan Layer Cage Capacity from a Poultry House Layout
Famou Machinery By Famou Machinery

Layer cage capacity is the result of a usable house layout, not simply the building floor area divided by a catalogue cage footprint. Columns, end equipment, working aisles and the approved stocking arrangement all affect the result. A transparent calculation keeps those inputs visible so that a change to the building can be traced through the proposal.

Establish the usable installation envelope

Start with internal building dimensions and a plan of fixed obstructions. Mark doors, columns, service rooms and areas reserved for equipment at the ends of rows. Record usable height as well as floor dimensions because vertical clearances affect the available arrangement.

Ask the cage supplier to position complete rows within that envelope. A row includes its support structure and connected equipment, not only the cage compartments. Check the proposed access routes on the drawing before accepting the number of rows.

Count compartments from the approved arrangement

The arithmetic should show rows, units per row, compartments per unit and the approved birds per compartment. As an illustrative example, four rows containing twenty units, each with twelve compartments, provide 960 compartments. The permissible number of birds still depends on the specific compartment and the requirements for the project; the example does not establish a stocking allowance.

If any row is shortened by a building obstruction, count it separately. This is clearer than using an average row length that conceals the affected positions. Identify empty or reserved sections rather than treating them as installed cage capacity.

Check the systems that serve that capacity

The calculated bird number becomes an input to feeding, drinking, egg collection, manure handling and environmental design. Confirm that the proposal uses the same number in each equipment schedule. A later increase in cage tiers should trigger a review of the connected systems, not only an update to the cage count.

Also review how operators reach the equipment. Access to upper tiers and end drives needs to be part of the supplied arrangement. Space that is required for service should remain reserved after installation.

Keep the calculation with the drawing

  • Drawing revision and internal building measurements.
  • Row-by-row count of installed cage units.
  • Compartment configuration and approved stocking basis.
  • Space excluded for access and connected equipment.
  • The capacity used by each supporting system.

When two proposals claim different capacities for the same house, compare these inputs before comparing the totals. The difference may come from a different stocking basis, an omitted aisle or a different arrangement of end equipment. Resolving that difference makes the final capacity a documented design outcome instead of an isolated sales number.
