Plastic slat flooring for piglets should be selected as a supported floor system. The panel surface is visible in a catalogue, while the beams, retaining details and edge conditions may not be. Replacing a panel based only on its outside length and width can therefore miss the features that determine whether it fits correctly.

Measure the supporting arrangement

Record the clear spacing between supports and the way the old panels bear on them. Include perimeter ledges and transitions to neighbouring floor materials. Take photographs from above and, where safely accessible, from below. These records help the supplier distinguish the panel size from the installed support span.

Request confirmation of the load basis for the proposed assembly. A rating without the corresponding support arrangement is not enough to approve an installation. The animal group, expected use and any equipment standing on the floor should be included in the design discussion.

Check surface and opening details

Ask for the dimensions and pattern of the slat openings, together with a representative sample or close photograph. Examine the finish at edges and joints. The selected pattern should be reviewed for the intended animals and the farm's requirements, rather than assumed suitable because a different nursery uses a similar-looking panel.

Also consider the location of feeders, drinkers and partitions. Their attachments must be coordinated with the floor layout. Identify whether fixing loads are carried by the panel, a beam or a separate frame and have that detail confirmed by the supplier.

Plan removal before installation

A panel may need replacement during the life of the room. Ask how it is retained and how it can be released without damaging adjacent sections. Record any locking clips or special connectors in the spare-parts list.

  • Match each panel type to its support drawing.
  • Check end sections and cut-edge arrangements separately.
  • Identify the replacement method around posts and feeders.
  • Confirm approved cleaning methods and material compatibility.

Use a sample bay when interfaces are uncertain

For a retrofit, an assembled sample section can resolve fit questions more reliably than repeated measurements of loose panels. Compare it with the actual supports and adjoining equipment before committing to the full quantity.

At receipt, inspect the panels and connectors for damage and verify the product reference against the approved sample. Installation should follow the supplied support and fixing instructions. A floor that appears level from above still needs the correct bearing and retention beneath it.
