Rabbit cage maintenance works best when faults can be located and isolated at row or cage level. A loose latch, damaged mesh joint or obstructed feeding point needs a different response from a drive fault affecting an entire line. Build the inspection record around these distinctions.

Inspect the cage structure systematically

Use row and position numbers to record damaged mesh, loose connections and door problems. Check accessible edges and the way latches engage. Inspect mounting points and supports as well as the cage itself; movement in the support can make a door appear misaligned.

Set inspection intervals through the farm's operating plan and supplier guidance. Increase attention after installation, repairs or an incident. Do not leave a known defect in use simply because the next routine inspection is several days away; arrange a suitable response with the responsible farm team.

Separate feeding faults from cage faults

For manual equipment, inspect removable containers and their fixings. For automatic lines, record whether the problem affects one outlet, one section or the complete system. That information helps maintenance staff investigate without making random adjustments.

Follow the manufacturer's isolation procedure before working on moving or powered equipment. Do not reach into a running conveyor to clear material. After a repair, check the affected section and relevant downstream points using the authorised restart procedure.

Keep useful spares and records

Maintain a parts list containing the exact cage version, latch type and feeding system references. Similar-looking components may use different hole patterns or connections. Store frequently needed small parts where they can be identified and protected from corrosion or contamination.

Close each maintenance entry with the action taken, replacement part and inspection result. Repeated damage at the same position deserves investigation of alignment, access or operating practice. A maintenance log should help eliminate recurring causes, not merely count how often the same latch or fitting has been replaced.
