A self-balancing air inlet should be evaluated through its documented operating behaviour in the intended ventilation system. The name describes a product concept, but the farm still needs to know the mechanism, permitted conditions and method for checking the installed assembly.
Define the trial question
Before observing the inlet, state what needs to be confirmed: movement, sealing, response under the specified conditions or consistency among installed units. Ask the supplier for the relevant procedure and expected observations for the exact model.
Use the ventilation design information to define the operating conditions for the check. A demonstration detached from the building may show the mechanism but not its behaviour in the installed air path. Record where the unit is fitted and which other equipment is operating.

Document the installation
Check the mounting position, surrounding opening and required clearances against the drawing. Identify any obstruction or unapproved alteration. Seals and the joint to the building should be reviewed separately from the moving mechanism.
Photograph the reference condition before the trial. If several units are being compared, label them by position. A statement that some inlets move differently is more useful when the particular locations and configurations are identified.
Observe without inventing settings
Follow the manufacturer's inspection method and use suitable instruments where the procedure calls for measurement. Record the relevant conditions alongside the observed movement. Do not force the mechanism or add improvised weight or restraint to make it behave like another unit.
If the result differs from the expected behaviour, review installation and system conditions with the supplier. Changing several variables together can make the cause impossible to trace. Keep each authorised adjustment and its result in the record.
Summarise a repeatable test
- Inlet model and installed location.
- Mounting and sealing checks completed.
- Ventilation conditions during the observation.
- Expected and actual behaviour under the supplied procedure.
- Corrective action and follow-up result.
This approach makes a farm trial useful for commissioning and later maintenance. It does not create a universal pressure or opening specification for every self-balancing inlet. The goal is evidence that the particular assembly behaves as intended within the farm's designed ventilation arrangement.
