A silo weighing system measures through a mechanical installation as well as electronic components. The way the silo load reaches the sensors is therefore part of the measurement system. Calibration should follow the supplied procedure and should not be used to conceal an unsuitable or altered support arrangement.
Review the load path
Identify the proposed weighing modules and their positions in the support assembly. Request the installation drawing for the actual silo and module combination. Ask which connections or restraints are part of the design and how they should be installed.
Record attached pipes, access equipment or other connections identified by the supplier as relevant to the weighing arrangement. A change after calibration may need review if it changes how the assembly carries or transfers load. The responsible designer should confirm structural and support details.

Identify the measurement chain
Record sensor or module references, the indicator or controller and the connection arrangement. Use the documentation to establish the displayed units and the meaning of zero and gross or net values. Operators should not have to infer those meanings from a familiar display format.
Confirm how the weighing information will be used, such as stock monitoring or integration with another system. That purpose helps define the required checks and the way results should be recorded.
Follow a documented calibration method
Use the supplier's method with suitable reference equipment or material and competent personnel. Record the reference values and individual indicated values at the required test points. Keep the conditions and equipment identification with the results.
If results are inconsistent, investigate the installation and measurement chain before changing settings repeatedly. Report the observations, including any position-dependent behaviour identified by the approved procedure. A single reading close to a reference does not establish performance throughout the operating range.
Retain a baseline for future checks
- Installed module and indicator references.
- Drawing and connection arrangement.
- Calibration method and reference information.
- Recorded results and adjustments made.
- Date, responsible person and follow-up requirements.
After maintenance or a relevant structural change, consult the equipment guidance on rechecking the system. Keep the previous results so a new condition can be compared with the established baseline. The useful outcome is a traceable measurement arrangement, not merely a display adjusted to show an expected number at one moment.
