Side-wall air inlets need to be selected for their role in a complete ventilation arrangement. Their opening, movement and sealing details interact with the fans and the building. A nominal inlet size is not enough to specify how air will enter the occupied space.

Provide the wall and house information

Show available wall openings, cage or pen positions and fixed obstructions on a plan and section. Describe whether the project uses new openings or retains an existing installation. The designer should evaluate the inlet arrangement with the intended ventilation system.

For a replacement, measure the actual opening and attachment points. Photograph the surrounding wall and any existing operating mechanism. A product that covers the opening externally may still need a different internal clearance or fixing detail.

Identify the opening mechanism

Ask how the proposed inlet moves, what operates it and how the position is coordinated across the house. Some products use different mechanisms or control arrangements, so the exact model should be named. Confirm the required connection to other controls where applicable.

Review the available movement and service space. Identify parts that need routine inspection and how an operator can reach them. The completed installation should not conceal an adjustment or connection behind fixed equipment.

Review seals and building joints

Request the mounting and sealing details at the wall interface. Distinguish the inlet's own seals from the joint between the assembly and the building. Confirm who supplies the relevant materials and how the installer verifies the finished connection.

Operating behaviour should be checked using the manufacturer's procedure and the ventilation design requirements. Avoid assigning a universal opening position or pressure setting to every side-wall inlet. The correct basis depends on the system and conditions.

Keep the specification complete

  • Model, opening dimensions and required clearances.
  • Actuation or operating mechanism supplied.
  • Control and building-interface responsibilities.
  • Sealing, inspection and replacement details.
  • Commissioning checks for the installed arrangement.

The chosen inlet should appear on the same ventilation drawing as the associated fans and other air paths. This makes later changes easier to review. Replacing an inlet with a different design should prompt a system check instead of assuming that a similar outside size guarantees equivalent operation.
